The XR line of rotary cutters was designed to be the most versatile and affordable machine on the market. Designed as a traveling head machine, it is not limited to only cutting and marking round and square tubes. It is a game changer in the fabrication market. The XRs are traveling head machines. See the section titled A TRAVELING HEAD VERSUS A FIXED HEAD at the end of this document to better understand why we feel this is superior to a fixed head machine. Below are a few examples of how the XR can help you expand your fabrication capabilities.

While the XR excels in many industries, the stair industry in particular benefits from the abilities of the XR. They can now fabricate the guard railing and the structural steel parts such as stringers, steps and angle iron parts on a single machine.

CAPACITY, SPEED AND ACCURACY

Process parts up to 24' long. Although the cutting area is limited to 24'. Parts may be longer if they can be processed flat and not rotated. For instance, cutting and marking stair stringers out of 40' long c-channel using a support stand on the end.

  • Large range of part sizes.

    • XR12:

      • 3/4" round tube up to 12" schedule 80 pipe 24' long.

      • 3/4" square tubes up to 12" x .5" wall. Larger if the part isn’t rotated.

      • Structural steel (c-channel, angle iron, etc.) up to 12" if rotated or up to 18" if not rotated and processed flat.

      • Supports rotating parts up to 2000 pounds. 4000 if processed flat.

    • XR6:

      • 1/2" round tube up to 6" schedule 80 pipe 24' long.

      • 1/2" square tubes up to 6" x .5" wall. Larger if the part isn’t rotated.

      • Structural steel (c-channel, angle iron, etc.) up to 6" if rotated or up to 12" if not rotated and processed flat.

      • Supports rotating parts up to 1000 pounds. 2000 if processed flat.

  • High XY rapid speeds of 1350 in/min minimizes the time between cuts. The Z axis rapids at 360 in/min.

  • High resolution of 0.001" (0.0254mm).

STANDARD FEATURES

  • Closed loop high performance Yaskawa EtherCAT servo motors.

  • Advanced torch height control (THC) system. The THC is designed and manufactured in-house to handle difficult situations such as running over cut-outs and perforations.

  • A Magnetic break away torch mount guards against torch damage in case of an accidental collision.

  • Floating head. Normally the torch will lower until it contacts the work piece and an electrical connection is made. This may not happen if the work piece is rusty, painted or non-conductive. In these situations, the floating head will auto detect the surface so that cutting may continue.

  • Laser pointer.

  • Dual marking system. Includes both a permanent marker and an air scriber.

XR Markers
  • Through tube coolant system.

    • Reduces slag and greatly improves cut quality.

    • Always ready with no need to attach a hose to the end of your part. Just load part after part and keep cutting.

    • Large reservoir and efficient coolant recovery ensure consistent flow.

  • Up to two automatic lifters can be installed to support longer, slender parts. One is included for free.

  • Comprehensive tooling package. Each XR comes with tooling to handle a wide array of parts.

    • An array of roller plates is supplied to rotate round parts from 1/2" diameter up to 12" for the XR12 and 6" for the XR6.

    • Two flat tooling plates are provided along with adjustable back stops for processing non-rotating parts.

  • Advanced CADCAM software (Cam-A-Lot)

    • Imports dxf, step and NC1 files.

    • Places bend marks on the work piece for accurate bending.

    • Frame designer with animated tube bending.

    • Wedge cutting square tubes as a smoother, stronger alternative to mitering.

    • Flat plate processing. Easily cut flat parts such as brackets.

    • NO maintenance or upgrade fees for the first two licenses.

JD2Website CAL NC1
  • The XRs have a dedicated motion control computer in the machine as well as a separate user interface computer. This allows smoother and faster operation.

  • Electronic control boards are manufactured in-house eliminating the possibility of being unable to obtain these parts in the future from a 3rd party source.

  • The control software is developed and maintained in-house.

  • One gantry mounted stabilizer of your choice to process shorter parts.

OPTIONS

  • Drill heads. The XR can drill clean accurate holes. This is a huge advantage over plasma cutting small holes that need to be tapped such as 1/4"-20. We use USA made Hoegen drill heads. The XR12 can mount two heads (1 1/16" max diameter) while the XR6 (13/16" max diameter) can mount one. The system includes automatic air clamps on the gantry, a separate coolant pump and an auto retracting splash guard.

XR12 Drill Chuck
  • Wood router mounts. Accommodates hand routers or high-speed spindles for cutting wood, plastic, foam, etc.

  • Gantry mounted stabilizers for different shape and size parts.

    • The 3" o.d. automatic round stabilizer retracts the transfer balls away from the part when not cutting. This minimizes scratching of the work piece while rapidly moving from cut to cut.

    • The small tube square/rectangular stabilizer handles tubes from 1/2" up to 4".

XR Stabilizer 4in
  • Up to 4" angle iron. Its unique design fully supports both the outside and inside faces of angle iron parts.

  • Fixed plate stabilizers allow parts up to 12" to be supported. Perfect for structural steel parts.

  • Ring adapters for rotating long non-circular parts such as square tube and structural steel.

  • Material lifters. One is included standard and is generally all you need. Sometimes two for very long slender parts.

  • Universal jig plates allow clamping almost any shape imaginable. Multiple styles are available.

OTHER SERVICES

  • Free training in our facility.

  • Free unlimited email support for the original owner.

  • Phone support is available however email is generally faster.

  • We welcome challenging parts. We work with our customers to provide the best possible solution. For instance, we designed a custom stabilizer and coolant feed system for a customer producing water filters out of perforated 1/8" wall stainless steel tubes.

A TRAVELING HEAD VERSUS A FIXED HEAD

RC3

RC3 - Fixed head machine

XR12 - Traveling head machine

Originally, we designed a 'Fixed Head' rotary cutter called the RC3. A fixed head feeds the tube from the rear of the machine and out the front. During testing, we discovered it’s many limitations and problems. It was decided to start over and build a traveling head machine. In a traveling head, other than rotation, the part stays in one location. The XR was the result and its performance dominated the fixed head. Below are some of the reasons why.

  • They can process almost any shape of work piece. Round, square, structural, non-uniform pieces and weldments. Tapered poles are a good example of a part the XR easily handles but is nearly impossible with a fixed head.

  • Reduced footprint. XRs are approximately 30 feet long including the coolant system. An equivalent fixed head machine requires roughly 50 feet because the entire tube feeds from the rear of the machine and out the front.

  • Work piece support is much simpler than with a fixed head. Imagine trying to cut a 6" c-channel 20' long from a 21' long billet. Virtually impossible on a fixed head but easy for an XR.

  • Reduced scrap. The XR allows you to cut extremely close (1/8") to each end of the work piece depending on your setup. With an optional stabilizer installed the XR will lose about 3-4" of material on the chuck side. With a fixed head, the material from the chuck to the tube support rollers will typically be scrap. This is usually around 8 to 13 inches. It gets worse if you wish to run a coolant hose to the rear of the tube.

  • Increased worker safety. With a fixed head machine you need to install front guard rails to prevent any workers in the area from accidentally being impaled as the tube feeds out the front of the machine. This isn’t necessary with the XRs.

  • Parts may be rotated or cut flat (non-rotating).

  • Much faster rapid speeds than a typical fixed head.
