Material Stabilizer

Gantry-Mounted Ring Stabilizer for XR6 & XR12 CNC Rotary Cutters

Overview

The Material Stabilizer is a gantry-mounted attachment designed for cutting larger square tubing, rectangular tubing, and angle iron that exceeds the 4" Square Stabilizer’s capacity.

It uses a main frame with cam followers and interchangeable ring assemblies to handle a wide range of material sizes. Each ring assembly rotates on the cam followers during cutting operations, providing stable support for heavier workpieces.

Functionality & Features

Main Frame & Interchangeable Ring System

The main frame mounts to the gantry and contains cam followers arranged in a circular pattern. Ring assemblies drop into the main frame and rotate on the cam followers, allowing the workpiece to spin during cutting.

Each ring is purpose-built for a specific tubing size. Weight-reduction cutouts in the rings reduce flywheel effect and make handling easier during changeover.

Roller Configuration

Each ring assembly uses four rollers—two fixed and two adjustable—to secure the workpiece during rotation.

The rollers can be transferred between ring assemblies, so you don’t need to purchase duplicate roller sets unless you prefer to keep multiple rings set up and ready to go.

Quick Size Changes

Changing sizes is fast and straightforward. Loosen the top bearing brackets on the main frame, lift out the current ring assembly, drop in the new ring, and lower the brackets back into position.

This allows you to switch between material sizes in minutes without removing the main frame from the gantry.

When to Use the Material Stabilizer

  • Cutting square or rectangular tubing larger than 4" × 4"
  • Heavy-wall square and rectangular tubing up to 12" × 12"
  • Large angle iron requiring rotary cutting
  • High-volume production of short, heavy parts
  • Applications requiring frequent size changes (ring swap system speeds changeover)

Angle Iron Configuration

Dedicated angle iron insert assemblies are available and bolt directly to a square ring. For example, the 6" angle insert assembly bolts to the 6" square ring and will handle all angle iron that has at least one 6" leg.

This allows you to use the same main frame and ring system for both square tubing and angle iron without a separate stabilizer setup.

Understanding Flywheel Effect & Torsional Wind-Up

Two physical effects influence cut quality when rotating heavy or open-profile workpieces:

Flywheel Effect: A rotating mass resists changes in velocity in proportion to its moment of inertia. The larger and heavier the rotating assembly, the more energy it stores and the more it resists acceleration and deceleration during direction reversals.

Torsional Wind-Up: When the machine reverses rotation direction, the chuck end of the workpiece responds immediately while the ring end—resisting the change due to the flywheel effect—lags behind. This creates a temporary elastic twist in the workpiece between the two support points. When rotation stops, the stored energy releases and the workpiece springs back, causing positional error at the cut location.

These effects are more pronounced with angle iron and other open profiles because they have less torsional resistance than enclosed shapes like square tubing.

To minimize wind-up with angle iron: use the appropriately sized ring for your material (the weight-reduction cutouts in the rings help reduce flywheel effect), and work with shorter workpiece lengths. Shorter pieces reduce the lever arm between the chuck and ring, which limits how much twist can develop.

Custom Plates

Custom ring plates are available for specific square and rectangular dimensions. Each plate is built to match the exact profile of the material being cut, providing precise roller positioning and support.

This is ideal for production environments where a specific non-standard size is run frequently.

Note: The rollers can be moved from plate to plate. Once you have a set of rollers, you only need to purchase additional ring plates for each new size—not additional rollers—unless you prefer to keep multiple rings set up simultaneously.
